Km/Km/Wesley High School is a legendary and leading school in Kalmunai Municipal Council. It celebrated its 140th anniversary on June 29th, 2023. The Methodist missionaries from England arrived in Weligama, Galle on June 29th, 1814, and worked hard for the development of education and spirituality throughout the country. Rev. William Ault, one of the missionaries, reached Batticaloa and started eight schools within eight months. Following his efforts missionaries reached Kalmunai in 1847 and started primary schools there.

In the 18th century, education for girls had been prohibited. In the 19th centuary a Methodist priest named Rev. George .J. Trimmer established a Girls’ Boarding School with eighteen girls on November 30th, 1883 in order to provi

de education for girls. Mrs. Jane Veeracuddy served as both a teacher and a warden, while Mr. S.  Govinder served as a teacher during the same period. Later, this school began to train Pupil Teachers and the first trained pupil teacher was Miss. Mary Sinnathamby from Kurumanvely.  Mrs.Jessie Jesudasan, who was invited to be the first Head Mistress in 1906, served until 1932. Miss Doris Robinson, the first missionary principal was appointed in 1927.Following her Miss. Merchant, Miss. E.J. Turnier and Miss. Barbara Atkins served as principals of the school

Miss Barbara Atkins (known as Atkins Amma) was a foreign missionary principal in the years 1935, 1936, 1938, and 1939. She has still been the celebrity in the hearts of the people in this area due to her tremendous service and dedication to education. Later on she established Christa Home where she engaged in creative and productive activities. Then, Miss Grace Thillayampalam from Point Pedro became the principal of Girls’ Boading School and served splendidly for ten years.

In 1901, The Methodist priest, Rev. Gabriel Leese founded an English Medium School for Boys in Kalmunai. Later the name was changed to Leese High School.  Though it was a small school it produced lawyers, doctors, and teachers. Swami Vipulananthar, M.H.M. Ashraff and A.R.M.Mansoor were some of the notable past students of this school. In May, 1953 Leese High School and Girls’ Boarding School were amalgamated and was named Wesley High School in honour of the Founder of Methodist Society, Rev. John Wesley.

Rev. George Nallathamby served as the first principal of Wesley High School from May 1953 to August 1954. Then, Mr. Sam. J. Wilson who started his role of principal in September 1954 but went to England for highest studies. In his absence, Mrs. S. Sinnaiya took over as principal in 1959. Mr. S. J. Wilson returned after completing his studies and he started again his position as principal from 1961 to 1972. The period from 1961 to 1983 was considered as the golden era of Wesley High School due to the great leadership of Wesley High School. Mr. Yogam Veluppillai was a wonderful person who brought the school to prominence in the Eastern Province. Mr. M. Subramaniyam and Mr. S. Mahalingam were the principals of Wesley High School. After the demise of Mr. Yogam Veluppillai Mr. M. Subramaniyam once again assumed duty as principal from November 1983 to 1988.
